Tips for In-Person Auction Bidders

Here are a few tips to help you bid successfully and to enjoy your on-site auction experience.

Consider the weather and setting: Dress appropriately for the conditions, and pack an umbrella or rain jacket and hat if appropriate. Most in-person estate auctions, for example, are held outdoors and often do not have a tent or other cover to handle the entire crowd. In-person consignment auctions, on the other hand, are typically held at an auction house or other indoor venue. Be sure to check the auction announcement for details.

Pack a snack or sandwich and some drinks. More and more, in-person auctions have eating options such as food trucks or someone manning a grill, but do NOT count on this. Again, check the auction announcement for details.

Pack what you need to bring your items home. Some items may need nothing special. Others, such as fragile glassware, artwork, etc. may require boxes, bubble wrap, old newspaper, etc. Some auctions may have this available, but do not count on it. Be prepared, and be happy when your items make it home in one piece!

Pack your “handy stuff”. You may like to have a small flashlight, loupe, pen, notepad, etc. to use while previewing the items.

Arrive early. You’ll need time to register to bid, find a seat, and review all the items in which you’re interested. Often there are items you missed in the catalog, or were added at the last minute.

Save a seat when you arrive. Popular and/or large auctions draw a crowd. Find a seat you like and leave a coat, hat, seat cushion, etc. in it to “reserve” it. This is very common at auction houses and widely accepted.

Pay attention! In-person auctions typically move quickly. Make sure you know which item is currently on the block (up for bids). You don’t want to bid on something you have no interest in! Be aware of your current bid: Are you the high bidder? Or have you been outbid? Don’t be afraid to confirm with the ring staff if you’re unsure.
